Edgewater, Chicago, IL: The Edgewater Chamber of Commerce (ECC) is excited to announce the Winter Bryn Mawrkets, a pop-up initiative focused on helping small business owners and artists that have been impacted by the pandemic, while bringing more shopping opportunities to the Bryn Mawr Historic District. This project is part of the BACP Small Business Storefront Activation Program aimed at activating vacant storefronts across the city.
The Winter Bryn Mawrkets will take place at 1052 W. Bryn Mawr Ave and 1040 W. Bryn Mawr on Fridays 3-7pm and Saturday and Sundays 1-5pm starting the weekend of Nov. 18 through Feb. 12, 2023.
Activating several storefronts in the Bryn Mawr Historic District will create additional destinations for people to shop for gifts, purchase art from local artists, view one-of-a-kind art installations and participate in hands-on activities through the holiday season and into the new year.
Engaged property owners are hopeful to see the corridor energized with an increase in foot traffic, garnering more interest from commercial tenants that see the potential in the area for their business concepts.
The large market space located at 1052 W Bryn Mawr, is a staged seasonal store, selling items such as self-care products and apparel, to home goods and art. Vendors include; Sweet Comb Chicago, Phlomena + Ruth, Sonya Marin Designs, Smushface Goods, augustnoa, Deep Field Aromatics, Art Hub Chicago, Gorjus Whips Cosmetics.
The smaller gallery space located at 1040 W Bryn Mawr, will feature multiple artists to showcase their works for a long weekend or up to three-months, selling their items and actively using the storefront as a studio space.
Artists are also brightening up the corridor with art installations in multiple vacant storefront windows along Bryn Mawr and providing scheduled demonstrations in the market spaces. Artists include Diane Hoffman, Andalib, Lewis Lain and internationally acclaimed artist, Antonio Davis.
“The Winter Bryn Mawrkets, aims to not only nurture the incredible entrepreneurs in our community but also help us reimagine the storefronts on W Bryn Mawr Ave into a place that supports shoppers and cultivates connections in the heart of our community, a place where people want to be.” Christina Pfitzinger, Executive Director, ECC
The first storefront mural installation at 1100 W. Bryn Mawr, will be completed in time for the markets opening day on Friday, November 18. Artist Ryan Tova Katz and team members David Flores and Indigo Quashie created a whimsical series of interactive installations.
Throughout the Mawrket months, the Chamber is hosting programming in the spaces, including hands-on demonstrations and activities for kids, such as face painting, balloon artists, book readings and of course, a visit from Santa!
Visit the Bryn Mawrkets for a modern take on the classic shopping experience. We hope our spaces inspire people to untraditionally shop and celebrate the festivities of the season.
