Sheridan Road Resurfacing
Bryn Mawr north to W. Sheridan Rd, W. Sheridan Rd west to N. Winthrop Ave
Bus pads provide reinforcement for the frequent heavy loads at bus stops, which prevents ‘waves’ in the street that lead to flooding.
Bus pads are being installed on the west side of Sheridan Rd ( southbound) starting next week. The east side (northbound) were completed this past week.
Our office will try to make this process as smooth as possible by giving you updates on upcoming phases of the project, but please note that there may be emergency situations that we cannot predict ahead of time, and your patience is appreciated. The work consists of placement of armor stone along the Lake Michigan shoreline at Berger Park to arrest further erosion and damage caused by several storms from 2020, and reconstruction of the gravel trail behind the revetment. Andersonville Water Main ReplacementService transfers are completed on the 1400 block of Farragut, with the final connection happening early next week. In order to do the final connection, there will be a water shut-off starting at 8am, and at the earliest the water will be turned back on by 12pm. After the final connection is made on Farragut, NPL will abandon the old water main, switch out fire hydrants, etc. Crews are on the 1400 block of Berwyn today, 9/17, starting the service transfers, which will go into late next week.
W Foster Ave N Clark St to N Marine DrCrews are continuing the concrete work and utility adjustments. Street milling is expected to start on or around Monday, September 27, 2021.
The CTA RPM (Red Purple Modernization) team will host a virtual meeting on Wednesday, September 22, 6pm, to share information with neighbors about the next major phase of construction coming to the community: the Gantry.
Crews will be using equipment and construction technology that we have never seen before in the City of Chicago. In order to reduce the impact on the community, the majority of the new embankment and viaduct structures will be fabricated off-site. Using pre-cast concrete box girders and a self-launching gantry that measures about the length of half a city block, most of the construction of the new train bridges will take place at track level, rather than with cranes in the alley. I highly encourage neighbors who live close to the project footprint, and those who enjoy construction and engineering, to register to attend Wednesday’s meeting: click here to RSVP.
In other construction news, Sheridan Road resurfacing and pavement markings are complete. The final phase of this project will take place in the coming weeks with the installation of concrete bus pads at bus stops. Bus pads provide reinforcement for the frequent heavy loads at bus stops, which prevents “waves” in the street that lead to flooding. I appreciate everyone’s continued patience throughout this project.
In addition to the installation of bus pads on Sheridan Road, there may be other traffic disruptions while CDOT crews take on an emergency stabilization and shore protection project in Berger Park. See my Construction Update below for more information about this urgent project.
Construction is still in progress on the bike lanes on N. Clark Street. Pavement markings should be complete by the end of the day today, and CDOT crews will begin installing No Parking signs on Monday. The installation of the signage should clear up a lot of the current confusion around the configuration. The installation of bollards to delineated between vehicular traffic and bike lanes will follow sign installation. We understand that it is a bit confusing at the moment, and encourage everyone to use patience and good sense when using this part of Clark St.

Dear Neighbor,
This weekend Bryn Mawr Ave. will be closed between Broadway and Winthrop to allow crews to begin demolition on the viaduct. This will be an ongoing closure beginning tomorrow, Friday, July 30, 8pm, through Monday, August 2, 5am. This closure will also impact sidewalks. Crews expect to first impact sidewalks on the north side of the street through Saturday afternoon, leaving the south side of Bryn Mawr’s sidewalks open. On Saturday afternoon, crews will flip and close down the south side of the street’s sidewalk, leaving the north side open to pedestrians. At all time, pedestrians will be able to access the northbound Bryn Mawr Red Line station entrance on the south side of Bryn Mawr Ave.
Additional impacts to consider when planning your travels this weekend:
Our staff and representatives from the CTA RPM team visited businesses on this block of Bryn Mawr to let them know about this weekend’s construction. Most plan to remain open during construction. Please make an effort to support them during this challenging time!
While you’re walking Bryn Mawr, head west to Andersonville and take advantage of some great deals during their annual Sidewalk Sale! Click here for more information.
Have a peaceful evening.
Sincerely,
Harry Osterman

Sheridan Road is a heavily traveled street and needs this project .ASCO has been advocating for it, and thanks to Alderman Harry Osterman, it has become a reality. The project entails making the corner curbs handicap accessible according to the newer codes, adding two curb cuts, and resurfacing the street. The work will start on the east side of Sheridan, followed by the west side.
Residents have submitted numerous complaints about delivery vehicles parking in traffic lanes along Sheridan Road, especially during heavy traffic periods. Please encourage delivery vehicles to use your driveways and loading areas whenever possible, or if necessary, schedule deliveries between 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to avoid the busy Rush Hour. Curb cuts were suggested to help alleviate this situation. These areas are to be used as temporary parking for delivery vehicles ONLY, and not to be used for any other purpose (for example, overnight parking). Alderman Osterman and ASCO discussed several locations, but the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) made the final decision to place them at 5815 N. Sheridan and at Sheridan Shores Care Rehab, 5836 N. Sheridan. Other locations were ruled out because of utilities that cannot be removed.
Thank you for your patience and understanding during this project. If you do not receive Alderman Osterman’s weekly newsletter, go to www.48thward.org to sign up.You will also receive updates about the resurfacing project.
