It is prohibited by the City of Chicago Fire Code, and the Association’s Rules to leave any debris or materials in the room with the trash chute by the freight elevators.
It is not uncommon for our team to be called to remove all sorts of debris – garbage, delivery boxes, furniture and more – that has been left here on service area floors.
Anything at all being left in this location can result in severe penalties should a City inspector walk through. Anything at all, big or small. It can also make it more challenging and difficult if fire fighters or paramedics who may need to use the service elevators to come and go with their equipment. Especially in the event of a fire and if smoke is present. Also, garbage chute fires are an elevated risk to the common areas of high rises such as Park Tower. Debris left in this location heightens the possibility that a chute fire could spread to other locations and cause unnecessary damage and injury.
Recently our team has had to remove debris from service areas more frequently. Some of these things have been large, such as the shelving in this photo. Some of it is smaller like cardboard boxes. Sometimes a whole bunch of boxes. Owners and residents are responsible for removal of such belongings and any garbage. Leaving it to our staff strains already very limited resources. Because of that and the risk to the building’s health and safety, the Board has assessed fines of up to $1000 for such materials being left in this location.
We would appreciate any help eliminating this nuisance and hazard. If you observe a neighbor leaving materials in this location, or suspect you know who has please contact the office at parktowercondo-mgmt@habitat.com.
