Mayflies! Scourge Of High Rise Windows…
June 5, 2024
Well, Undoubtedly There May Be More Than Just Mayflies Attracted To Your Windows
But mayflies can be pretty prolific especially this time of year. And then of course, the spider likes to follow, because it eats the fly…my oh my! Which is why we treat the windows when we do the window washing in the Spring and Summer.
So we all open our windows, and they get caught between the screen and the glass. In the building I live in, they allow cats. Of course my feline is endlessly entertained this time of year when we like to open the windows and these pests seem attracted to it like a magnet.
There is not much we can do about outdoor pests that are attracted to the buildings and light and moisture…and human activity in general! But after a couple inquiries I did some sleuthing online and this is what I learned and can share that is relevant to high rise windows:
Mayflies are attracted to light and can swarm around buildings at night, especially near windows and doorways. In the morning, you might find piles of dead mayflies below windows and lights. Here are some things you can try to keep them away:
- Reduce light: Keep lights near windows off or low, replace cool lighting with warmer bulbs.
- Seal openings: Inspect your windows and screens and make sure they’re intact and sealed. If you need assistance or a screen replacement, put in a ticket with our team.
To clean them up, you can use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
Worst case scenario? If you have a large mayfly problem – a real invasion at your windows – let us know and we can have our pest control operator visit and see if there is may be something else going on that might be a contributing factor.
