Special thanks to Unit Owner Reed Evans for bringing this to our attention.
We are told there are quite a few catalytic converter thefts occurring locally and even in the neighborhood and that it’s a problem that is escalating. This sadly includes street parkers who live at Park Tower with the latest report from a vehicle parked almost in front of 5509 North Kenmore Ave – only a block away from Park Tower.
Below is a link to an article about this from the Tribune and possible deterrents.
When this happens, parkers have to get their car towed, pay for alternative means of travel such as a car rental until if and until car insurance company approves a claim for you. Luckily, the parker we are aware of experiencing this had car insurance that pays for it, because they aren’t cheap, running around $2000 for our resident!
Reed told us you can get a cage/clamp that can be put over the catalytic converter. Also you can mark it with orange paint or scratch the serial number into it. All apparently effective deterrents.
It is also reported that Toyota Prius owners are at the highest risk, with the most sought after catalytic converters.
