Michael W. Frerichs, the Illinois State Treasurer, would like to remind all residents their offices currently hold more than $2 billion in unclaimed property. Because the Illinois Treasurer’s records are updated twice each year, they encourage residents to frequently check their I-Cash database located at https://icash.illinoistreasurer.gov/.
I actually checked it out myself, and discovered over $100 of unclaimed cash I did not know the State was holding, and it was well worth my time to fill out a claim and get it processed!
Recently enacted state law eliminated weeks of waiting by electronically accessing public records to verify identity information. Your claim may now be paid without additional documentation being needed thanks to this new law. The IL Treasurer’s office is charged with carefully safeguarding unclaimed property for as long as it takes until they can return it to its rightful owners. Last year, they added more than one million new properties.
The State recommends that residents check their database each year around their birthday to see if any additional unclaimed property is in the Treasurer’s care.
