And at a community such as Park Tower where there is a free composting service available, THEY AREN’T NEEDED!
More on composting below.
There certainly are advantages to having a garbage disposal, and if it is properly used it can be a very convenient. Sadly, they are oftentimes not only misused, they are taken for granted and abused. A resident learned this the hard way recently, when a garbage disposal was used to grind chicken bones and quite a challenging situation erupted.
Many licensed plumbers will be the first to tell you that garbage disposals are terrible for plumbing in general, and that goes even moreso in high rise plumbing where drain lines are shared with hundreds of other residents, and what one person does in their unit can impact many others. Our plumber will not install them and recommends that owners remove them!
Here are some of the primary reasons that garbage disposals can be problematic for plumbing drain lines:
As stated, while convenient, garbage disposals must be used properly and they often aren’t. Here are some handy garbage disposal do’s and don’ts from American Home Shield (ahs.com).
What Not to Put in a Garbage Disposal
Are you wondering what to do with your non-friendly disposal items? Try composting some of your food scraps to reduce waste and help your garden thrive. [More on that below since we have a composting service available at Park Tower.]
For proper garbage disposal maintenance, you should also always run cold water through your food disposal appliance while it is in use and for 30 seconds after it has finished grinding food. This helps ensure that all food bits wash down the drain and none remain in your disposal.

We are trying to be fair, by presenting what they say can be put down a garbage disposal. However, our plumber’s opinion is that even soft foods – fruits and vegetables – can be a problem because they are acidic and can create a paste that can stick to the plumbing and help produce build up and clogs.
SO – you’re ready to get rid of your garbage disposal you say, but you want an alternative. Let us know at parktowercondo-mgmt@habitat.com. If you need help with removal and/or want to sign up for the Block Bins composting service, we can help. For more on that:
