Learn More about Chicago’s Plastic Bag Ban The City of Chicago’s plastic bag ban went into effect on August 1, 2015. Retailers occupying stores that are more than 10,000 square feet are no longer allowed to offer plastic bags. The ban will be extended to smaller chain stores and franchises in August 2016. Chicago’s Minimum Wage Ordinance is in Effect as of July 1, 2015
The City of Chicago Minimum Wage Ordinance; went into effect July 1, 2015,and raises the minimum wage to $10. The ordinance applies to employers that maintain a business facility within the city of Chicago and/or are required to obtain a business license to operate in the city. It also applies to employees who work at least two hours in the city within the period of two weeks.This includes domestic employees, day laborers and home health care workers. A union may waive its members’ rights to receive the minimum wage as part of a collective bargaining agreement.The minimum wage increase will be phased in on an annual basis from July 1, 2015 to 2019. The minimum wage increases to $10.50 in 2016, $11 in 2017, $12 in 2018, and to $13 in 2019. In addition, the first 10 minutes of each Business Education workshop will be devoted to reviewing the minimum wage increase: BACP offers workshops every Wednesday (3:00 – 4:30 p.m.) and Fridays (9:30 – 11:00 a.m.) at City Hall.
