Given the time of year, as we previously posted heating is our priority, consistent with requirements of relevant Chicago building codes. We typically default to heating service and only switch to cooling if conditions are expected to result in discomfort. However, as we move closer to the winter, temperatures reach a point where the cooling tower must be empty for the season.
Even if our Cooling Tower was online, the biggest obstacle this time of year, is that by the time we are able to stop providing the heat in the mornings and the water in the system is cool enough for AC, we would likely already be past the point where we need to begin heating the water to provide heat for the overnight hours. It can take 6 to 8 hours, just for the temperatures in the line to moderate enough, to begin the switch. We can’t put cold water in our boilers, and we can’t put hot water in our chillers.
Nonetheless, the cooling plant is now shut down and our team is already beginning the process of planning seasonal maintenance. We do not expect AC to return until the Spring.
If we do experience unseasonably warm weather, we realize this is not ideal. Warm sunny days, and the lengthening colder nights, do make it a challenge. While it may not be 100% comfortable for 100% of our residents, 100% of the time, resident comments and observations can help us make some adjustments to help improve conditions as much as possible.
