Property Tax Rebate Deadline Nov. 30th
November 17, 2016
Attention Unit Owners!! The City of Chicago may owe you money!
REMINDER
This year, the City of Chicago established a Property Tax Rebate program to provide property tax relief for qualifying residents citywide. The program was created to help qualifying Chicago homeowners offset some of the increase in their property taxes.
The standard rebate provides such owners between $25 and $200, based on the increase in the City’s portion of their most recent property tax bill and their household income.
Here are the basics in order to qualify:
- Own your own home and received the Cook County Homeowners Exemption in the most recent property tax year.
- Household adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less
- City portion of property tax bill increased on the most recent bill over the previous year’s bill
- Current on all Chicago property tax bills
- Do not have City debt (i.e. parking tickets). Though, rebate can be applied to it.
There are 26 locations (and City hall) where qualified home owners can apply. For those of you who live in Park Tower, you can go to Northside Community Federal Credit Union at 1011 West Lawrence.
You must have:
- Most recent property tax bill (should be from this summer)
- 2015 Federal Income Tax Return (if required to file)
- Illinois State ID or Driver’s License, or other government issued picture ID such as a passport.
Applications will be accepted at any of the neighborhood locations and City Hall through November 30, 2016.
I spoke to one owner who said the process took him about 20 minutes, and he received a $100 rebate.
